Diversity Acceleration activity

A joint outreach initiative by the three Tokyo‑area RIKEN centers—AIP, CBS, and IMS—was held at the Faculty of Science, Ochanomizu University, as part of the diversity promotion efforts led by the IMS Diversity Working Group. The two‑day intensive lecture series, conducted on September 24 and 25, 2025, aimed to give undergraduate students the opportunity to learn directly from active researchers and to explore potential career paths in science. Six lecturers from across the participating centers delivered talks introducing their research fields, with Special Advisor to the President, Dr. Makiko Naka, also attending and supporting the program.

Approximately 30 students participated, engaging in lively discussions about their academic interests, research questions, and future aspirations. The open and interactive format allowed students to speak freely with researchers, ask questions, and receive guidance on how to pursue scientific careers. Many participants noted that the lectures broadened their perspectives on the diverse opportunities available within the research community.

From IMS, Dr. Naoko Sato and Dr. Ai Niitsu presented lectures based on their expertise. Dr. Sato discussed how the immune system distinguishes beneficial from harmful substances in “The Wonders of the Gut,” while Dr. Niitsu introduced computational approaches in structural biology through “Getting Started with Biomolecular Design.” Their contributions were highly valued and played a key role in the program’s success.
